Helping to Heal
The Arts in Healthcare

In 1995, Sheeran Lock curated an exhibition of photographs commissioned from Jerry Hardman-Jones to showed how the visual and performing arts, interior and landscape design, and community schemes can be used effectively in all aspects of health care to transform old buildings, enliven new ones, and create environments that 'help to heal'. Subjects included NHS flagship hospitals such as St. Mary's Hospital, Isle of Wight and the recently opened Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, as well as specific projects for children, and community-based programmes for the elderly and mentally ill. Sheeran Lock organised the exhibition on behalf of the national organisation Arts for Health, which toured it throughout the UK and abroad for five years.

Feedback

'The exhibition demonstrates some of the many ways in which enlightened health authorities are currently using the arts to benefit both patients and staff alike. Jerry Hardman-Jones's beautiful images record the impact of these initiatives on people, young and old, from every walk of life. Their shared pleasure, so evident in his work, clearly shows that creative use of the arts can be an invaluable tonic and should surely be incorporated into every possible aspect of a caring and civilised society.'
